New Primary School Teachers Receive Training

Roseau, Dominica – November 25, 2011…The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development on Friday held a training workshop at the Public Service Training Centre for thirty-six new primary school teachers in Effective Teaching Techniques and Classroom Management.

Chief Education Officer Steve Hyacinth told teachers that as new members of staff of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, their attitude in the classroom should reflect the vision and mission of the ministry.

“One of the things we pride ourselves on at the ministry is the vision we have outlined which is the provision of high quality education for all. That is the premise upon which we build our education system. As a teacher you need to know it and be inspired by the vision because that is what is going to guide what you do in the classroom,” Hyacinth said.

Hyacinth also encouraged the new teachers to report to classes always prepared and to see themselves as managers of their classrooms.

“You are a leader in the classroom and you need to ensure that you take students on a journey of learning. Therein lies your responsibility,” he said.

The teachers participated in orientation sessions including Classroom Management and Assessment strategies. Facilitators, which included education officers and learning support advisors from the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, also presented on Ethnic Diversity, Lesson Planning, Teaching Strategies and Teacher Appraisal.

Teachers were given an introduction to the laws guiding the profession according to the Education Act, Regulations and Code of Ethics for schools.

Assistant Chief Education Officer Jeffrey Blaize PhD also presented on the topic, “Personnel Matters”.
